This is part of a fascinating symbiosis with the Acacia Ant. The tree provides a home for the colonies inside the enlarged thorns and also supplies various sweet, nutritious secretions for the ants. They in turn repel other insects, and herbivores and even garden the ground round the base of the tree to prevent seedlings taking root. Amazing!!
