Emerald Cockroach Wasp (Ampulex compressa) with prey.....
....this wasp has the most remarkable lifestyle. It stings a cockroach to temporarily immobilise it, then stings it again to knock out the escape reflex. The wasp guides the cockroach to a burrow by pulling on an antenna, lays an egg on the beetle and then seals it in. The larva hatches and then enters the beetle and consumes its internal organs in an order which enables the beetle to live as long as possible. After pupation, the young wasp exits the burrow, leaving the cockroach to finish dying. Astonishing !
