Ilulissat has a population of 4500 but with almost as many sled dogs. These are 'half wolf' and used to roam wild in the town. Attacks on children were not infrequent so it was decreed that all schools and playgrounds should be fenced....the painting was to make the fences more attractive. Nowadays all dogs within the town have to be kept chained so it is much less of a problem.
