Mayan teeth.

It was a custom amongst Mayan women of high rank to have their teeth drilled and pieces of jade inserted. Apart from the pain at the time of the operation ( and probably subsequently too) there was the risk of the tooth dying and becoming infected. One such grave we saw had been occupied by a young woman who died as a result of dental infection following this procedure.
